About the artist

Karl Wagner 1839–1923

Karl Ludwig Friedrich Wagner, also known as Carl Wagner, was born in Karlsruhe on 8 May 1839 and died in Düsseldorf on 15 August 1923. He studied at the Karlsruhe Academy from 1854 to 1864 under Ludwig des Coudres, whose academic discipline in portraiture and history painting shaped Wagner’s early work. From 1873 he was based in Düsseldorf and became a member of the artists’ association Malkasten, participating in the city’s active artistic milieu.
