Abraham Toorenvliet

Abraham Toorenvliet the Younger belonged to an important Leiden family of artists. Born in 1682, he was the son of the painter Jacob Toorenvliet and the grandson of the drawing master and glass painter Abraham Toorenvliet. Growing up in this artistic environment, he continued a family tradition that had been closely connected with the Leiden school of painting. He is particularly associated with portraiture and drawing. Far fewer works by Abraham are known than by his father, making securely attributed examples particularly interesting. His work represents the continuation of the refined Leiden artistic tradition from the seventeenth into the early eighteenth century.
