Anna Maria van Veeren

Anna Maria van Veeren was a Dutch painter who specialised in flower and fruit still lifes. Born in Loenen aan de Vecht in 1806, she studied under Willem Hekking and Hendrik Gerrit ten Cate. Her compositions typically consist of carefully arranged flowers, fruit and foliage, painted with close attention to colour, texture and botanical detail. In this respect, her work continued a still-life tradition that had occupied an important place in Dutch painting since the seventeenth century. Van Veeren exhibited her work publicly and became a recognised member of the Dutch artistic community at a time when professional opportunities for women artists remained limited.
