About the artist

Arnold Houbraken 1660–1719

Arnold Houbraken was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, etcher and writer, born in Dordrecht in 1660 and active there before moving to Amsterdam around 1709–10. He trained first with Willem van Drielenburch and Jacobus Leveck, and from about 1675 to 1678 studied with Samuel van Hoogstraten, whose classicising approach and interest in art theory strongly influenced him. Houbraken joined the Dordrecht Guild of Saint Luke in 1678. As a painter, Houbraken produced history scenes, portraits, genre subjects and allegories, often on a relatively intimate scale. Biblical and mythological narratives dominate his surviving paintings, with carefully posed figures, expressive gestures and a preference for clear, theatrical compositions. His drawings reveal a similarly controlled line, while his work as an etcher and designer for book illustrations demonstrates his command of narrative detail. He also produced decorative paintings, including ceiling and chimney-piece decorations; a documented commission for the Arend Maartenshof in Dordrecht dates from around 1701.
