About the artist

Phillip van Santvoirt 1726 1711-1726

Philipp van Santvoort was a Flemish painter active in Antwerp in the early eighteenth century. His precise dates of birth and death are unknown; the documentary record places his activity between about 1711 and 1722, the signed and dated paintings with Capel.nl proof his activity and lifespan extended to at least 1726. He was trained in Antwerp under Gaspar Jacob van Opstal the Younger, a painter of biblical and mythological subjects who maintained a substantial workshop and was strongly influenced by the grand manner of Rubens. Van Santvoort is known principally as a figure painter, working in the tradition of late Antwerp history painting. His surviving Rape of Tamar by Amnon, now in the National Gallery, London, provides the clearest indication of his manner. The biblical episode is staged as a dramatic tableau, with the protagonists caught in a moment of violent movement and framed by curtains. Van Santvoort combines strongly articulated figures with carefully observed still-life details: metal vessels, fruit and domestic objects occupy the foreground, giving the composition both material richness and visual depth.
