About the artist
Thomas Heeremans was a Haarlem landscape painter and art dealer, baptised there in 1641 and active in the city from the 1660s. He entered the Haarlem Guild of Saint Luke in 1664. A notarial document of 1659 records him as a pupil of an artist named Everdingen, probably the Haarlem classicist Caesar van Everdingen; however, little of that master's influence is apparent in Heeremans's surviving work.
Heeremans is best known for lively Dutch landscapes of rivers, canals, villages, beaches and harbours, particularly winter scenes with skaters, sledges and travellers. His compositions often organise a broad, horizontally extended view around a frozen or flowing waterway, with small, carefully distributed figures animating the landscape. His clear architectural detail, delicate handling of distant forms and relatively bright, varied palette distinguish his work from the more subdued manner of his principal influence, the Haarlem painter Klaes Molenaer. Heeremans adapted Molenaer's wintry subjects and atmospheric effects, but introduced greater movement, colour and sociable activity.
