About the artist

Nicolaas Riegen 1827–1889

Nicolaas Riegen was born in Amsterdam on 31 May 1827 and died there on 27 November 1889. He remained based in Amsterdam throughout his career, working principally as a marine and landscape painter. His principal subjects were Dutch coastal waters, rivers and estuaries, with sailing vessels, fishing boats and shipping providing the characteristic focus. He also painted occasional city views. Riegen’s best-known works are maritime scenes in which the condition of the water and atmosphere determines the mood. He could depict both calm water and heavy weather, arranging vessels carefully within broad expanses of sea or sky. His oils combine precise observation of ships and rigging with a more atmospheric treatment of light, particularly in changing skies, reflections and distant horizons. Paintings such as Choppy Water (1869) demonstrate his ability to give movement to the surface of the sea while retaining a balanced, legible composition.
